Sanggar Kinanthi
is envisioned to be an oase, a learning center for everyone, the enthusiasts and supporters of the Arts
and Culture of Indonesia.
Sanggar is an Indonesian word which means a place for gathering
or fellowship, mostly for the development of arts or culture.
Kinanthi is from the word Kanthi, an old Javanese
word, which literally means "together with." Kinanthi also means mentoring or guiding others. Kinanthi is also one of the
famous "tembang" (Javanese traditional song).
Sanggar Kinanthi, the Indonesian
Arts & Cultural Center, was officially founded in 2002. Far away from the homeland, Cynthia C. Laksawana who is curently live in Jamaica Plain (Boston), Massachusetts, wants to introduce the Indonesian
culture in the Boston area and to share the passion in the Indonesian arts by peforming Balinese dances. She wishes to make
Sanggar Kinanthi a place where people come together to learn and appreciate the Indonesian arts and culture.
